Fifty-two Iowa municipal utilities and their joint action agencies
have committed to a $275,000 study of one or more jointly-owned wind
farms. The commitment is based on reservations for 106.3 MW of wind
turbine capacity. The project grows out of an IAMU-led effort that
investigated sites, costs, and financing options. The work should be
completed in two to three months.
Utilities signed up for a variety of reasons; most for more than one.
Among them are the preference of customers to include renewable energy
in their supplies, the likelihood that state or federal policy will
require a renewable portfolio standard, the desire to get the economies
of scale and risk management opportunities that come with a large,
jointly-owned project, and the overwhelming scientific evidence that
indicates human impact on climate.
