IAMU Biodiesel Testing
By conducting research, IAMU aims to encourage and empower its member
utilities to
use biodiesel in diesel generators.
This page provides information on the current status of those efforts
and general resources on biodiesel.
2006 Efforts
In February 2006, IAMU was awarded a grant from the Iowa Energy
Center to conduct biodiesel emissions tests on stationary electric
generators. From September 25 to October 5, 2006, emissions tests
were conducted at
Winterset Municipal Utilities and the Story City Municipal Electric
Utility. Both utilities allowed emissions tests to be conducted
using biodiesel blends of up to B20 (20% biodiesel) in their generators.
B100 emissions tests were also conducted in Story City.

Emissions data for NOx, CO, and PM are being processed currently, but
information will be made public in late 2006 or early 2007, and
biodiesel will be discussed at the 2006
IAMU Diesel Generation
Workshop on December 12-14, 2006.
IDNR 2005 Rule Change
Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IDNR)
new rule allows the usage of up to 2%
biodiesel in all stationary generators in Iowa. Note: Utilities can burn
up to B2 in their generators without having to modify their operating
permits. If utilities want to burn between B3 and B10, they must contact
the Iowa DNR and modify their operating permits first.
2004-2005 APPA Report

Plant in the fall of 2004. Call Anne Kimber at 515/289-1999 to view a
